How To Plan A Friends’ Group Stay In Kodaikanal

What to check before booking a private bungalow, villa, cottage or group stay with friends.

A friends’ trip can sound simple.

Pick dates. Find a place. Book rooms. Drive to Kodaikanal.

In practice, it usually needs more thought.

People are coming from different cities. Some can leave early. Some arrive late. Some want to go out. Some want to stay in. Some care about food. Some care about bathrooms. Someone is quietly managing the whole booking. Everyone wants the trip to feel easy.

The right stay makes that possible.

The wrong stay can turn the weekend into coordination: too many rooms, not enough bathrooms, no food plan, unclear house rules, no staff, difficult roads, no hot water, or a property that looks private but does not work well for a group.

Here is what to check before booking a friends’ group stay in Kodaikanal.

Decide What Kind Of Friends’ Trip This Is

Not every friends’ trip is the same.

An old college group may want long conversations, food, fire and a house to themselves.

A Bangalore or Chennai group may want a short weekend away from work and heat.

A group of couples may want comfort, privacy, good rooms and meals without too much planning.

A work-friend group may want a private setting that feels informal but still well run.

A bachelor group may want atmosphere, but the property still has to be suitable for the house rules, neighbourhood and type of stay.

Before choosing the property, ask what the group actually wants.

Do you want to spend most of the time at the house?

Do you want to walk to the lake?

Do you want food arranged?

Do you need a bonfire or pizza evening?

Do you need full privacy?

Do you want a quiet stay or a more social one?

Do you want hotel-style service or a private-house feeling?

Does the group need to respect quiet hours and house rules?

Once that is clear, the stay type becomes easier to choose.

Choose Private Space, Not Just Capacity

Many Kodaikanal group stays advertise how many people they can sleep.

That is useful, but it is not enough.

A property may fit a large group by using extra mattresses, shared halls, dormitory rooms, compact cottages or multiple disconnected rooms.

That may work for some groups.

But if the group wants comfort and time together, the questions are different.

Are the bedrooms comfortable?

Are the bathrooms attached?

Is there space to sit together?

Is there outdoor space?

Can food be served at the property?

Is there staff on site?

Can people stay in if the weather changes?

Does the property feel private?

At The Dunnottar, the Whole Bungalow sleeps up to 15 guests across five ensuite bedrooms. When the Whole Bungalow is booked, the full five-bedroom house and grounds are private to one group, with no other guests on the property.

For friend groups, that is the clearest arrangement.

The group has the house, the garden, the tables and the day to itself.

Check The Bathroom Situation

Bathrooms are not glamorous, but they matter.

For a group of friends, attached bathrooms make the stay much easier. People wake at different times, get ready at different speeds, return from walks or outings, and may be leaving early the next morning.

The Whole Bungalow has five ensuite bedrooms: The Dunnottar Suite, Master Bedroom, The Rose Library, The Boiler Room and The Old Study.

North Bungalow has two ensuite bedrooms.

South Bungalow has three ensuite bedrooms.

If the group is comparing hotels, villas, cottages and private bungalows, this is one of the first things to check. A property that sleeps many people but has too few bathrooms can quickly become uncomfortable.

Plan Food Before Arrival

Food is one of the main reasons a friends’ trip works.

It is also one of the main reasons it becomes tiring.

Who is booking dinner?

Does the group have to go out again after arriving?

Can tea be arranged?

Can breakfast be slow?

Can lunch happen at the house?

Can the group have a pizza or bonfire evening?

Does anyone need simpler food after the drive?

At The Dunnottar, breakfast is included for every guest.

Lunch, dinner, tiffin, grill and wood-fired pizzas are available from the bungalow kitchen on request and charged separately. Tea, coffee and pantry access are available through the day. Meals can be served indoors, outside in the garden, on the pizza patio or to your room, depending on the day’s arrangements.

For a friends’ group, we recommend planning at least the first meal before arrival.

After the drive up to Kodaikanal, it is easier to settle into the house and eat there than to begin the trip by organising another outing.

Do Not Choose A Self-Catering House Unless You Want To Run It

A private villa can sound like the obvious choice for a friends’ group.

But not every private villa is serviced.

In a self-catering house, the group may need to arrange food, cleaning, taxis, setup, supplies and daily logistics. That can work if the group wants to cook and manage the stay.

But many friend groups do not want that.

They want the privacy of a house without the work of running one.

The Dunnottar is not a self-service rental. Daily housekeeping is included. House staff are on site. The Bungalow Manager and team can help with meals, room service, luggage, laundry, taxis, transfers, bonfire setup, pizza oven setup, local arrangements and practical questions.

That means the organiser does not have to become the caretaker of the trip.

Think About The Evening

For friends, the evening is often the centre of the trip.

This is when the group finally sits down. No one is rushing to a viewpoint. No one is checking out. The weather cools. Food comes out. The day slows.

At The Dunnottar, evenings can gather around dinner, the garden, the bonfire areas or the wood-fired pizza oven, depending on what has been arranged.

Bonfires can be set up in designated outdoor areas on request, subject to weather and the day’s arrangements. Wood-fired pizzas are available on request and charged separately. The pizza oven can be set up with the team’s help.

If you know the group wants a bonfire or pizza evening, tell us before arrival.

These are not hotel amenities to be switched on at the last minute. They are part of the house rhythm and should be planned properly.

Choose A Location That Lets People Split Up

A friends’ group does not always move together.

Some people wake early. Some want to walk. Some want coffee. Some want to go boating. Some want to sit in the garden. Some need a call. Some want to do nothing until lunch.

A good location lets that happen.

The Dunnottar is on Lake Road, with Kodaikanal Lake just outside the front gate. Bryant Park, cafés, boating, Kodaikanal Club and the bazaar are close by. Kodaikanal Golf Club, forest walks, viewpoints and hiking trails are a short drive away.

This means the group does not need a car for every small movement.

A few people can walk to the lake. Others can stay back. Some can go out for coffee. Others can read or rest. The group can come back together for meals.

For friends, that flexibility matters.

Build A Loose Weekend, Not A Tight Itinerary

Kodaikanal has enough to do.

Lake walks. Boating. Cafés. Bryant Park. Coaker’s Walk. The bazaar. Forest roads. Viewpoints. Golf. Hiking trails. Short drives. Long conversations.

But a friends’ trip does not need to become a list.

A better plan is usually looser.

Arrival and tea. Dinner at the house. Slow breakfast. Lake walk or boating. Lunch back at the bungalow. Quiet afternoon. Pizza or bonfire evening. Coffee before departure.

That may be enough.

A good friends’ trip leaves room for people to decide slowly.

Be Clear About House Rules

This is important.

A private bungalow is not the same as a party venue.

Before booking any friends’ group stay, clarify what is allowed and what is not.

Can outside visitors come?

Is loud music allowed?

Are there quiet hours?

Can a bonfire be arranged?

Can the pizza oven be used?

Are vendors or decorators allowed?

Can alcohol be brought or served?

Is there a security deposit?

What happens if the group exceeds the booked guest count?

At The Dunnottar, the house is suitable for private friend gatherings, food, conversation, garden time and bonfire evenings. It is not positioned as a loud party property.

Any use beyond the booked staying guests — including outside visitors, vendors, music, photography, event-style arrangements or larger gatherings — must be discussed and approved in advance.

This protects the house, the guests, the neighbourhood and the quality of the stay.

What To Tell Us Before Booking

When you enquire, send:

  • dates

  • number of guests

  • where everyone is travelling from

  • whether you want Whole, North or South

  • expected arrival time

  • meal requirements

  • whether you want a bonfire

  • whether you want wood-fired pizzas

  • whether taxis or transfers are needed

  • whether anyone needs laundry

  • whether any non-staying visitors are expected

  • whether there is a special occasion

  • any food preferences or allergies

The clearer the enquiry, the easier it is to guide you.

Whole, North Or South For A Friends’ Group?

For larger friend groups, the Whole Bungalow is usually the best fit.

It gives one group the full five-bedroom house and grounds privately, with no other guests on the property.

For smaller groups, North or South may be enough.

North Bungalow has two ensuite bedrooms, private interiors, living and dining spaces, the Sun Room, a study and a separate entrance.

South Bungalow has three ensuite bedrooms, private interiors, open living and dining space, a study, patio, garden terrace and separate entrance.

If North and South are booked separately, the interiors are private to each group. The outdoor grounds may be shared if the other bungalow is occupied, but only between the two bungalow groups.

For complete privacy, choose the Whole Bungalow.

For a smaller group, North or South may be the better fit.

A Friends’ Stay That Is Easy To Organise

A good friends’ stay should not require one person to manage everything.

That is the point.

The property should help the group arrive, settle in, eat, gather, step out, come back, stay warm, have enough bathrooms, get tea when needed, arrange the evening, and leave without the whole thing becoming work.

The Dunnottar is a private family bungalow, but the house is looked after through the day.

Breakfast is included. Meals are available on request. Daily housekeeping is included. Laundry can be arranged. House staff are on site. The Bungalow Manager and team can help with meals, room service, taxis, transfers, bonfires, the pizza oven, local arrangements and practical questions.

For friend groups, that combination matters.

You get the privacy of a house.

You do not have to run it yourself.
