A House For Friends To Come Back Together
For old friends, college groups, work friends, and circles that need a few days of food, fire, walks and time in one place.
Friend groups often talk about taking a trip long before the trip actually happens.
People move cities. Work takes over. Some friends have children. Some come back to India once or twice a year. Some are in Bangalore, Chennai, Coimbatore, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Singapore or elsewhere. Everyone says they should meet properly, and then another year passes.
A few days in Kodaikanal can become the reason to finally gather.
Not for a packed itinerary. Not to move from viewpoint to viewpoint. But to have a house for a few days: breakfast in the garden, a walk by the lake, long conversations at the table, food from the bungalow kitchen, an evening by the bonfire, wood-fired pizzas from the outdoor oven, and enough time for the group to remember how easy it once was to be together.
That is the kind of friends’ stay The Dunnottar is suited to.
The Trip Is Really About Time
A friends’ trip is rarely only about the destination.
It is about time that has become hard to find.
Time without rushing back to work. Time without meeting only over dinner in a city. Time without everyone leaving after two hours. Time for conversations to continue the next morning. Time to sit with people who knew you before your daily life became so full.
For old friends, the property matters because it becomes the setting for that time.
A hotel can give rooms. A resort can give facilities. A group cottage can give capacity.
But a private house gives the group somewhere to belong for a few days.
The Dunnottar is a carefully restored 19th-century Scottish bungalow on Lake Road by Kodaikanal Lake, in the Puliyadi family since 1947. It has always been a family home, and that is part of why it works for friends. It is built around rooms, tables, gardens, food, weather and time spent together.
The house does not ask the group to keep moving.
It lets the day stay in one place.
Why Hotels Often Do Not Work For Friends
Hotels are convenient, but friend groups often become scattered inside them.
One person is on one floor. Another is down the corridor. Two people are still in the room. Someone is waiting in the lobby. Breakfast happens in a shared restaurant. The best conversations happen in passing, or in someone’s room, or while trying not to disturb other guests.
That may be fine for a short city stay.
It is less satisfying when the point of the trip is to be together.
Friends need common spaces that feel like theirs: a table, a living room, a garden, a place to sit after dinner, a corner for coffee, a place where the group can stay late in conversation without feeling like it is occupying a public lobby.
A private bungalow changes that.
The group has rooms, but the trip is not confined to rooms.
There is somewhere for the day to happen.
Why Rough Group Stays Are Not Always Right Either
Kodaikanal has many group cottages and large-capacity stays.
Some are useful for college groups, budget groups, dormitory-style stays, or trips where the main requirement is to sleep many people under one booking.
But not every friend group wants that kind of stay.
A group in its thirties or forties may want privacy, but also comfort. They may want a bonfire, but not a loud party property. They may want food arranged, but not to cook. They may want a house with character, but not a place that feels difficult to manage. They may want to stay together without compromising on bathrooms, hot water, heating, housekeeping or service.
The Dunnottar is not a budget group cottage.
It is a private family bungalow with five ensuite bedrooms, one-acre grounds, staff on site, breakfast included, meals on request, daily housekeeping, room service, laundry, room heaters, hot water, Wi-Fi, bonfire spaces and a wood-fired pizza oven.
The group gets the atmosphere of a private house without having to run the house itself.
What The Dunnottar Gives A Friends’ Group
The Whole Bungalow gives one group the full five-bedroom house and grounds privately, with no other guests on the property.
That is the clearest option for a friends’ reunion or private group break.
The house is divided into North and South, two self-contained bungalows within one larger property. Across the Whole Bungalow, there are five ensuite bedrooms: The Dunnottar Suite, Master Bedroom, The Rose Library, The Boiler Room and The Old Study.
There are living rooms, dining spaces, studies, pantries, patios, garden paths, lawns, hammocks, outdoor benches, bonfire spaces and the wood-fired pizza oven.
This matters because friend groups do not all move in one direction.
Some people wake early. Some stay over coffee. Some go for a walk. Some read. Some take calls. Some sit in the garden. Some want to go boating. Some want to do very little.
A good friends’ stay allows all of that without the group breaking apart.
Breakfast, Food And The Long Table
Food is often where a friends’ trip actually happens.
The first coffee. The late breakfast. The second round of tea. Lunch that stretches. Tiffin in the afternoon. Pizza in the evening. A conversation that begins at the table and continues outside.
At The Dunnottar, breakfast is included for every guest.
Lunch, dinner, tiffin, grill and wood-fired pizzas are available from the bungalow kitchen on request and charged separately. Tea, coffee and pantry access are available through the day. Meals can be served indoors, outside in the garden, on the pizza patio or to your room, depending on the day’s arrangements.
This means the group does not have to organise every meal outside.
You can go out when you want to.
You can also stay in.
That is often the difference between a trip that feels managed and a trip that actually gives friends time together.
The Garden, Bonfire And Pizza Patio
The outdoor spaces are part of the stay.
The one-acre grounds have lawns, garden paths, patios, hammocks, outdoor benches, bonfire spaces, quiet corners and the wood-fired pizza oven.
During the day, the garden gives the group places to separate without leaving the property. Someone can sit with coffee. Someone can read. Someone can call home. A few people can walk to the lake. Others can stay back.
In the evening, the garden changes.
A bonfire can be arranged in the designated outdoor areas on request. The wood-fired pizza oven can also be set up with the team’s help, depending on the day’s arrangements. If the Whole Bungalow is booked, these spaces are available to your group. If North and South are both occupied, timing is coordinated between the two bungalow groups.
This is often where the evening settles: food, fire, conversation, the weather, and the feeling of having nowhere else to be.
A Weekend Without Overplanning
A friends’ trip does not need to be full to be good.
A simple weekend could look like this.
Arrive in the afternoon. Have tea. Walk to the lake before evening. Settle into the rooms. Dinner at the house. A slow breakfast the next morning. Boating, cafés or a short walk for whoever wants to go out. Lunch back at the bungalow. A quiet afternoon in the garden. Pizza or bonfire in the evening, if arranged. Coffee the next morning before leaving.
That may be enough.
Kodaikanal has viewpoints, walks, cafés, boating, Bryant Park, Coaker’s Walk, the bazaar, forest roads, golf, and nearby trails. But a friends’ trip does not have to become a checklist.
The point is not to see everything.
The point is to finally have enough time together.
Kodaikanal Weather Helps
Kodaikanal changes the body’s rhythm.
The air is cooler. The light softens. The lake gives the day a centre. Evenings can be cold enough for room heaters, hot food and time indoors. Rain or mist can slow the day without ruining it.
For friends coming from Chennai, Bangalore, Coimbatore, Madurai, Hyderabad or Mumbai, the change in weather is part of the reason to come.
You can step away from city heat, work schedules, traffic and routine.
But you do not have to disappear into isolation.
The Dunnottar is on Lake Road, with Kodaikanal Lake just outside the front gate. Bryant Park, cafés, boating, Kodaikanal Club and the bazaar are close by. Kodaikanal Golf Club, forest walks, viewpoints and hiking trails are a short drive away.
The group can stay in, step out, split up, return, and gather again.
That flexibility is useful for friends.
Who This Stay Works For
The Dunnottar can work well for:
old school friends
college friends now spread across cities
work friends who have become real friends
couples travelling together
NRI friends meeting in India
creative friends looking for a few quiet days
small birthday groups
friends planning a slower weekend in Kodaikanal
groups who want privacy, food and comfort without managing a self-catering villa
It is best for groups who want time together in a private house.
It is not best for groups looking for a loud party venue, a dormitory-style group cottage, or a property where outside visitors, late-night noise or event-style use can happen without discussion.
The Dunnottar is a family home opened to guests. It suits friends who want food, conversation, fire, garden time and a few days together, while respecting the house, the neighbourhood and the way the property is run.
Whole, North Or South?
For a friends’ reunion or larger group, the Whole Bungalow is usually the best fit.
It gives the full five-bedroom house and one-acre grounds privately to one group, with no other guests on the property.
For smaller friend groups, the North Bungalow or South Bungalow may be enough. North has two ensuite bedrooms, private interiors, living and dining spaces, the Sun Room, a study and a separate entrance. South has three ensuite bedrooms, private interiors, open living and dining space, a study, patio, garden terrace and separate entrance.
If North and South are booked separately, each bungalow is private to its own group. The outdoor grounds may be shared if the other bungalow is occupied, but only between the two bungalow groups.
For a friends’ stay where complete privacy matters, book the Whole Bungalow.
What To Tell Us Before You Come
When you enquire, it helps to tell us:
your dates
number of guests
whether you want the Whole Bungalow, North or South
where everyone is travelling from
expected arrival time
whether meals are needed on arrival
whether you want a bonfire, grill or pizza oven
whether transfers or taxis are needed
whether anyone needs laundry
whether there are any special occasions
whether any visitors or additional arrangements are being considered
If the stay is just for the booked group, that is straightforward.
If you are planning anything beyond the booked staying guests — outside visitors, vendors, music, photography, a larger gathering or event-style use — please discuss it in advance. These are not automatically included.
A House For The Conversation To Continue
The best part of meeting old friends is often not the big moment.
It is the ordinary time around it.
Someone making coffee. Someone walking back from the lake. Someone sitting in the garden after breakfast. Someone telling the same story again. Someone noticing that the group has not laughed like this in a while.
The Dunnottar gives that time a setting.
A private bungalow by Kodaikanal Lake. Five ensuite bedrooms. Food from the bungalow kitchen. Breakfast in the garden. Room heaters and hot water for cold evenings. A bonfire, if arranged. Wood-fired pizzas, if planned. One acre of grounds. A house where the trip can happen without always leaving the property.
For friends who have been meaning to meet properly for years, that may be enough reason to come.
